In the heart of the city center, the Place du Marché de Roanne, surrounded by its colorful facades and its shops, is the home of the inhabitants. It hosts the Tuesday and Friday morning markets every week.

During the Revolution, the “small” market square took place on the site of the garden of the Convent of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth. They are dedicated to educating girls and caring for the elderly. The square has always had a commercial tradition since from 1822, two weekly markets animate it and is called "Place du Marché Neuf". Over time, it became Place du Marché.

Marché de Roanne sur la place du marché

The Market Square, emblematic by its animation and dynamism

The Place du Marché is above all the meeting place for residents on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The fairgrounds are numerous there for the sale of their local products. Follow the route of the market stalls carefully so as not to miss any producers, all proud to display the quality of their typical product! Cheeses, fruits and vegetables, meat, bread, there is something for everyone.

The Place du Marché is also the festive meeting place on Thursday evenings in summer in Roanne: Thursdays live Terrace ! A music group is chosen each week by the city, and each bar or restaurant leaves its terraces to welcome visitors in a warm atmosphere. The sound of glasses flashing, laughter, people starting frenzied dances in the middle of the dance floor, this is the content of a Thursday evening at Place du Marché in Roanne!

Now converted into a residence, it is possible to enter the interior courtyard of the “Espace de la Source”. Let yourself be surprised by this glass-roofed interior courtyard, surrounded by colorful facades. No one would think of that when they saw the exterior facade.

One can only notice this beautiful Renaissance style mansion called "Château Déchelette". Eugène Déchelette, a wealthy industrialist in Roanne weaving, was to build this house in golden stones in Saint-Maurice-les-Châteauneuf in the Brionnais region. Its roof in colored glazed tiles is noticed first. At the top of the building, a gable dormer is surmounted by an ornate lintel with small arches. On the front in the center, the owner's "D" framed by 2 dragons as well as the date of construction written on 2rd floor, sign the Maison Déchelette. The apartment of this rich industrialist had many rooms for the time!

The porte-cochère provides access to the interior courtyard with arcades on each side. Dare to go through the door and discover pretty little shops or workshops full of charm.

number 17

This large Louis XVI-style building forms the corner of Place du Marché and Rue du Coq. The architect Passzokowicks built this building in 1900! Look up well and find the carved rooster on the corner of the facade. The name of the street is certainly due to this sculpture!

The building had a tragic start: commissioned by Jules Déchelette in 1900, he never saw the work completed since he died in 1909 at the age of 27. Until a few years ago, the house remained the home of his descendants and was the scene of a lively family life.

The ground floor is a room accommodating various businesses. Since 2017, Maison Bouquet, bistronomic restaurant, gave a new face to the residence: a modern and stylish decor to welcome the Roannais.
