Massif of black woods

It takes its name from the compact and continuous fir forests that cover it.
It is one of the oldest silver fir forests in Europe.
From these two peaks, one of which culminates at Pierre-sur-Haute at 1637m and the other at Puy du Montoncel at 1287m, there is a splendid view of the Puys chain and the Mont Blanc massif, but also of the that of the mounts of the Madeleine and on all the plain of Forez.
The freshness, the hot summer days, the flamboyant spectacle of the autumn months, when it is adorned with a thousand colors will enchant hikers, mountain bikers, and lovers of nature and calm!
However, be careful not to get lost! it is strongly advised to follow the signposted paths and to be well equipped.


Since 1995, certain spaces have been classified in the European Natura 2000 black wood network. Water is everywhere, it feeds an exceptionally rich fauna and flora. It is therefore a remarkable ecological whole where many insects, birds and mammals live together.

At a time when we are becoming more and more aware of the urgency of working to maintain biodiversity, and in order to pass on a preserved heritage to future generations, we must take care to respect these places and the facilities that have been made, keeping them clean and attractive: tracks, paths, signs, trees, fences and plantations…
