Guided tours

All year, every day.

Located 18 km from Roanne, in the north of the Loire department, at the crossroads of the paths of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle and Saint-Martin, the town of Ambierle owes its fame to a Benedictine abbey founded at the height Middle Ages. In 1011, it became priory of the Order of Cluny. The surviving buildings make it possible to understand the organization of monastic life which regulated most of the activities of the village built around the Priory.

The prayer :
The priory complex includes parts built in the 1753th century, 1757th century turrets and a door from the same period. The main facade housing the Benedictine community was built between XNUMX and XNUMX.

The Church:
Placed under the patronage of Saint-Martin, the priory church is in the flamboyant Gothic style. (built in yellow limestone from Charlieu).
A Historic Monument since 1840, it still has its superb 36th century stained glass windows representing, among other things, the patron saints of the neighboring parishes. The monastic choir is made up of XNUMX stalls facing the Altarpiece.

The Passion Altarpiece:
Michel de Chaugy, Lord and Chamberlain of the Dukes of Burgundy, donated this Flemish polyptych Altarpiece in Ambierle to the church.
1476. The Passion scenes are carved in polychrome wood and the paintings are attributed to the studio of the Brussels painter Roger Van der Weyden.

Ambierle is also… a Michelin-starred restaurant, the Côte Roannaise vineyard, pottery baked in a wood-fired oven and the book village.
