Of the fortified castle of Espinasse, all that remains is the dungeon which, very mutilated, survived the ravages of 1590, including the town, which had, it is said, eight thousand inhabitants. The village must have been important since one went there high and low justice.

All year, every day.

This keep had been built on an artificial motte five or six meters high surrounded by ditches (the remains of which can still be seen). It was probably built in the XNUMXth century on the site of a Roman camp. It was part of a set of important constructions intended for the inhabitants and guests of the castle.

It resembles the dungeons of Roanne and Couzan by its rectangular plan with rounded angles. Before being incorporated into a set of constructions, it was isolated in the middle of the enclosure. It was then the last reduction in resistance in the event of an attack. One entered only by a flying bridge, by the first floor; the lower room had no communication with the outside; it was accessed by means of ladders opening into a trap door in the floor of the upper room.

This construction of seventeen meters high, and whose walls are one hundred and fifty centimeters thick at the base, seems to belong to the first half of the XNUMXth century. The second floor, later, could be due to a reconstruction of the XNUMXth century. The opening of the ground floor, much later, can be attributed to the XNUMXth century.

Located in a private and fenced property.
