The architecture converges on the axial chapel of the heart where the Virgin is highlighted in a blue color, color of Mary.
It replaced a first chapel dedicated to Saint-Nicolas, dependent on the Clunisian priory of Régny and of which the oldest known mention, is from 1614.
From a remote school, there exists in Lay, a particular devotion to the Virgin. From the 15th century, the chapel of the hospital was dedicated to the Virgin. In 1855, the quinquennial feast of Notre-Dame de Lay was founded. It originates from the desire of the inhabitants of the place to see renewing every five years, the feast of 1854 organized on the occasion of the inauguration of the statue of Our Lady of Lay, adorning the facade.
This sanctuary is a high place of Marian worship, which knows during the quinquennial feast, an influx of pilgrims with illuminations and decoration of the whole village, with a large procession.
