A little history :
Built in the 1930s, the Marivaux, a small neighborhood cinema, is a historic cultural venue in downtown Roanne. To try to survive, in 1981 it was transformed into a small two-screen complex, but the cinema was in difficulty and the Marivaux ceased its activity in 1985.
Some local film buffs got together and sought to put the small Marivaux theater back into operation, with a capacity of 144 seats at the time. To do this, they asked for help and support from the municipality and founded an association: Ciné Rivage, created in 1988. The association then set clear objectives: professional exploitation of the site with an exclusively cultural purpose through the broadcast of films films that never managed to be shown in this city. Marivaux became Espace Renoir in 1989.
In 1998, the constant support of the municipality allowed the Ciné Rivage association to acquire the walls of the Espace Renoir, which allowed the reopening of the large hall with a capacity of 292 seats. In 2002, a complete renovation of the Espace Renoir was undertaken by the association. In 2018 the seats in room 2 were completely changed and those in room 1 were partially renovated.
In 2019, the Espace Renoir cinema brought together 61 spectators (CNC entries). In 909 and 2020, despite the cinema being closed for many months due to the Covid-2021 crisis, Espace Renoir achieved around 19 admissions.
