Located in the heart of Roanne, in a beautiful mansion between courtyard and garden, the Joseph Déchelette museum is an encyclopedic museum with rich and varied collections. A little over 36 works and works of art are listed today. This museum pays homage to Joseph Déchelette, owner of the house and forerunner in scientific archeology.

The museum, encyclopedic, has rich and varied collections from prehistory to the twentiethe century. It is open to Western arts (Japan, China, Africa), Egyptian art, visual arts as well as applied arts.

Painter from Roanne, Jean Puy was born on November 8, 1876 and died on March 6, 1960. He was a prolific artist with various influences: Impressionism, Pointillism and Fauvism. It is now widely exhibited in the eponymous room of the Musée Déchelette, dedicated to the painters of the XNUMXth century.e century.

1905: Salon d'Automne, Jean Puy is described as "Fauve" alongside Henri Matisse and André Derain.

December 1905 : Ambroise Vollard, a great art dealer and talent scout (Picasso, Gauguin), buys his studio fund from him and takes it under contract for twenty years.

1940 : Jean Puy after many trips which led him to discover the Breton landscapes, the artistic madness of Paris and the southern sun returns to Roanne where he will end his career there.

Who is Joseph Déchelette?

Joseph Déchelette was born in 1862 in Roanne and died at the front in 1914 in Vingré. Coming from a large family in the textile industry in Roanne, he was a recognized archaeologist. His contribution to the richness of the museum's collections is immense and due to his many travels.

For 22 years, he was also the curator of the Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology of Roanne. Joseph Déchelette helps transform it into a modern museum where works are documented and compared.

Upon his death, Joseph Déchelette bequeathed his personal collections and his library to the town of Roanne, as well as a bequest of 100 gold francs for the construction of a new museum. The new museum was installed in the mansion in 000 and was renamed in his honor Joseph-Déchelette Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology.

  • 1794 : The origins of the museum could be from this period. There was a natural history cabinet, a place of exhibition at the Jesuit college created by a Roanne resident, Lapierre,
  • 1844: An archaeologist Fleury Mulsant donates his collection and inaugurates a museum on the top floor of the current Town Hall, a former Capuchin convent,
  • 1923: The museum moves to 22 rue Anatole France at 2e floor of the private mansion bequeathed by Joseph Déchelette.
