The guidebooks

With more than 1500 km of marked routes, the Roannais is a great playground for lovers of hiking and nature.

The diversity of atmospheres and landscapes make it possible to satisfy both tourists and locals. In order to find what you are looking for, in addition to our website, you can opt for a topoguide published by the French Hiking Federation or for the 2 topoguides of Roannais Agglomération: Hikes & discoveries in the Roannais et Walks & discoveries in the Roannais.

The topoguides give you all the details on each hike (duration, elevation, parking, etc.). They also offer sections on local stories, fauna and flora.

Randonnée dans les Monts de la Madeleine

Hiking on the Monts de la Madeleine massif

The Monts de la Madeleine are located in the extension of the Massif Central straddling the departments of Allier and Loire. They are spread over 120 hectares between the towns of Roanne and Vichy. Mid-mountain area, the summit of the massif located in the original forest of the black woods, is the Puy de Montoncel. It rises to 1287 meters above sea level. The massif has remarkable heritage, natural or cultural assets and is perfect for hiking. Let yourself be charmed by the Madeleine mountains and their dense and mysterious forests, their peat bogs, guardians of biodiversity, their deep valleys carved by preserved streams ...

Walks on the banks of the Loire

From Pouilly-sous-Charlieu to Saint-Georges-de-Baroille, the Loire crosses the Roannais. The Loire, the longest river in France, shaped the Roannais. Many activities revolve around and on the banks of the Loire. Hiking reigns supreme in this part of the territory. The Loire Nature trail, the most famous walk in Roanne which revolves around the longest river in France, allows a la carte walks as close as possible to the Loire and the Canal de Roanne à Digoin, without forgetting the Gravières de Mâtel.
