Dug between 1830 and 1836, over 56 kilometers punctuated by ten locks, the canal, fed by water from the Loire, connects Roanne to Digoin via Briennon. It joins, in Digoin, the Canal du Center and the Canal lateral to the Loire and thus the entire network of inland waterways in France. Following the "quiet canal" means discovering Roanne and its surroundings differently, in a contemplative way. By bike, the towpath runs along this waterway allowing for a shaded family outing.
