The Town Hall, a historic building at the service of the inhabitants

Place de l'hôtel de ville de Roanne en 1907

Encouraged by the Duke of Persigny, the mayor of Roanne, Charles Boullier, decided to build a new Town Hall for the entire population. It was therefore necessary to level the mound on which the convent was built. Rue Jean Jaurès was below and a central staircase provided access to the convent which became the town hall.

35 architects from all over France presented projects. The town called on the architect Corroyer, a student of Viollet-le-Duc. He took charge of the work plan.

The building is typical of a XNUMXth century construction, proud, beautiful and imposing!

It has a polychrome effect thanks to the juxtaposition of several stones:

  • The black stone of Volvic,
  • The light yellow stone of Chevroche de la Nièvre,
  • The golden yellow stone of Apremont,
  • The ocher stone of Saint-Maurice.

Started in 1865, the work was completed in 1874. A delay due to the war of 1870. Today, the Town Hall accommodates the various municipal and state services and council rooms. It is open to the public daily for all administrative procedures at the announced times. If you wish to visit the Town Hall and its different rooms, do not hesitate to go there during the European Heritage Days.
