Why the construction of the Halles Diderot?

Halls existed in Roanne on the Place de la Bourse du Travail and were destroyed in 1963. In June 1980, the town of Roanne and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry took up the idea of building halls in place of an Ets J.Renaud textile factory (eg Tissage Beluze). This location was ideal since it was close to 2 commercial locomotives: Suma and Casino. Also, a group of buildings housing more than 5000 people was next door!

This construction project meets a threefold objective:

  • Construction of food halls with local products in the city center,
  • Creation of a 140-space car park around the covered market,
  • The creation of Les Halles was to thwart the establishment of a new large store interested in the location.

The Halles opened in 1983. The then Minister of Commerce, Michel Crépeau and Yves le Gaillard, president of the CCI, inaugurated this new gastronomic venue in Roanne.

In 2023, the Halles Diderot celebrates its 40th anniversary

After a year of work, on December 2, 1983, the ambitious project to create a commercial space dedicated to the sale of food products in the city center finally came to fruition with the opening of the Halles Diderot in Roanne.

Today, the Halles Diderot have become an economic hotspot in Roanne and still demonstrate strong vitality.
